… demonic eye. The medic lowered her head, the apprentice shook hers nervously, then the medic glanced back to Gareth who cautiously raised an eyebrow.

“Answer him, Dreksa,” the medic said.

In a very quiet squeak, the apprentice answered, “There is not effeks. No effeks. I see well.”

Although her Escali needed work, Gareth accepted that the child didn’t seem to suffer for having had the procedure, despite her strange appearance. But the chance of losing an eye was nothing compared to the chance of losing his life.

The elderly goblin carried on without concern. “The contract is the final component. I will take care of that matter. I have learned how to phrase these things properly.”

“Properly?”

She nodded. “An open-ended contract will result in a demon taking full advantage of you – turn you into a raging fiend, like I said before. It takes specific wording, and specific limitations, to control a demon and limit the host offering. But I will take care of that for you.”

Gareth didn’t ask about her ratio of successful-to-failed ‘contracts.’ He truly didn’t want to know.
