The medic bared her tiny, sharp teeth. “No, that is not what I am saying. Not exactly. No. We covered that already, and I do not like to needlessly repeat myself. No, no. What I mean is that gnomes – gnomes, yes? – do not respond well to transplant. My expertise, I will grant you, is in treating goblins. Most of my personal knowledge is of treating goblins. But I hear things from the upworld, and in particular, I hear that no tissue transplant on any creature has been successful. Non-goblin creature, I mean. Like you.”
“Like me,” Gareth groaned. “So there are no options.”
“Transplants are typically followed by illness, tissue death…” the decrepit goblin continued as if she hadn’t heard him. “I have seldom had this problem with my goblin patients. Not to say there are no problems. But not those. No, there is one option I know that might work for you, but I doubt you will like it.”
Gareth inched forward in his squat, goblin-height seat.
The medic paused for effect, and looked him in the eyes with skepticism, before asking abruptly, “Do you know about demonic possession?” … [cont.]
