… time, older than Dreksa and Kander, with a stern demeanor and scarred but youthful face. He gave Gareth a curt nod, then glanced past him toward the cavern doorway. Gareth sat up slowly and followed the apprentice’s gaze to find the elderly medic entering the wet room with a heap of cloth in her hands and smile on her face. It wasn’t a friendly, warm smile, but it was proud.

“You are still you?” the medic barked, breaking the relative quiet of the wet room. Gareth felt that he should be startled, but he didn’t notice his heart racing. He realized he didn’t notice his heart much at all.

“I think I am,” Gareth replied, not knowing how else to answer. He thought his voice sounded like his own, though with a deep and subtle echo he couldn’t identify. “Did… it work?”

The medic approached the mat on the dirt floor and looked Gareth over. Gareth also had the thought to look down and inspect the surgical site. Without waiting for the medic’s permission, he cautiously pulled back the bandages and was surprised by how clean it all looked. He had been cut open quite thoroughly, it seemed, and sewn back together with delicate spiderwebs, but beyond that he had no concept of what had been done to him. The incision almost seemed to glow with an eerie warmth. He cautiously moved the bandages back to their original positions.
